What happened to ladylike? When did this charming characteristic  become undesirable? It’s such a lovely quality, a strength that seems to have slipped away as ‘sexy’ becomes what we as women are increasingly pressured to be. Ladylike is often viewed as prudish, uptight or at worst, prissy. But the most attractive women I know are elegant, sexy in a discrete way – they are essentially, classy. If we as women aim to be respected than we must be respectable. And yet so many of the women  put on pedestals throughout my generation have been anything but elegant. Talent nor sophistication equate to success, instead we as a society have paved paths to victory lined in terrible things such as sex tapes or explicit movements we now define as ‘dancing’.

Increasingly I see women wearing makeup that blurs their faces into cartoonish proportions, women transforming every aspect of their body with plastic surgery, women behaving like objects instead of human beings. It makes me embarrassed. We’ve replaced being a lady with things like twerking or books titled ‘selfish’ full of nothing but selfies.  I see no refinement in so much of what us as women pursue and prioritize. And it makes me both sad and mad because I know as a sex we are better than this. Our allure has been snatched. As for men, inherently we have a few traits that they lack, one of which is refinement. So it seems to me, we are allowing one of our gender strengths to slip away. What a sad shame. And so I take this Kate Spade collaboration, a brand so refreshingly full of ladylike charm; their success gives me hope.  A hope that reminds you to be a lady, a trait that should be here to stay. For the sake of our sex, we cannot let it fade away.
