I believe that when you are genuinely happy, that contentment that rises through your bones, turns your stomach to butterflies and feels like a few glasses of wine…yes, when you feel like that, you should celebrate. Perhaps this advice comes from the fact that I am a girl very prone to melancholy, so when I wake up effortlessly happy one day that turns into a few weeks and then all the sudden its been over a month and summer arrives so the sun matches my mood; wow, I simply feel appreciative, like I won the emotional jackpot and I’m doing everything to assure it sticks around and doesn’t leave again. However, I feel like so often we save celebrating for only the bigger, somewhat rarer occasions – but there is so much to honour on a daily basis. It is so easy to forget to quietly say ‘thanks’ for whatever or whomever is contributing to your own joy. And so this poem, and this park and these palm print pillows and the lemon slices in my perrier & the tealights and tiny plants we hung in a nearby tree, and the dappled sunlight that came through the leaves, these are all wonderfully happy things to me. And while summer is a state of mind, I hope mine sticks around way after the season ends, but no need to think about that just yet, it’s only May, my favourite time of year has only really just begun. It’s going to be a beautiful one.
