Summer, it’s still here but for me, it started back in April. It has been a very hot, sweaty five months. I’m not complaining, far from it, but these last weeks of August are stretching on slow. I’m ready for the season finale, which means my mind is already on autumn. I miss the ease of throwing a trench over my sloppiest ensembles in an effort to make them chic, I miss baggy knits that I can wear braless without nipple phobia, I miss hot coffee and scarves and hats that don’t leave my head boiling hot. The leaves are already gathering on the streets here, which means it’s coming. Cool, crisp weather and with it, the cosy clothes I miss. When La Redoute asked me to style some A/W outfits, it felt like a good way to start gearing up to get out of shorts. (I’m tired of shorts, I am also tired of shaving my legs in order to wear them). I won’t lie, I started dreaming up my fall wardrobe back in July, not so much in the form of a shopping list but rather, a vague inventory of colours and fabrics I love. The beginning of autumn has always felt like an exciting time in life, more of a fresh start than the beginning of a new year. Perhaps this comes from my geekiness as a child, whereby I would be anxious to return to school. There would be a new backpack, sharp, fresh pencils and a stack of books from a list I was itching to tell the teachers I had already read over the summer. Yeah, I guess I was a pretty annoying kid, no wonder I was bullied. Living in Paris for so many years, there is what the French call, la rentree, when all the Parisians return from August vacations to a brand new September – this also feels like the turning over of a cycle – a reunion but also a restoration of sorts. Everyone returns rested and ready to conquer the city again. So, yes,  autumn excites me. September is always my best work month, when I make the most money and usually one I always look back on with fondness. So, like every year, I am excited. I have no specific reason for this excitement, but I am invariably craning my neck and peeking forward with positivity. I have high hopes, for work, for new small beginnings and also for my wardrobe. Starting with the resolution to wear white shirts with everything, from denim co-ords to layers of chunky grey wool or even just on their own, with coffee and perhaps a boyfriend. I should probably start thinking about acquiring one of those again as the weather cools. I’m far too sweaty in the summer to be going on dates. But give me a scarf and a trench and I might be ready for a man.
