Do you remember the Kipling era at school? The colourful backpacks with the fuzzy gorilla keychains that swayed as the kids walked the halls? Everyone had one, I always wanted one. But the Hello Kitty backpack we hauled all the way from the Sanrio shop in Singapore had to do, or so my Mom said when I begged. Fast forward a decade and it seems Kipling are back, well actually I have no idea if that’s true, but for me, personally, the brand is back. And I found a style a little more suitable for a 26 year old, in my favourite colour and instead of that gorilla, I added my own keychains. Because I’m grown up and I can do that now. I can buy a backpack without asking my Mom. I won’t lie, I do miss all my Hello Kitty memorabilia but her signature bow is the same shade red, so I’m paying tribute to the only cat I really loved in a more mature way, I guess? As a girl that wears glasses, backpacks are always a dubious handbag choice for me – I am all for looking dorky but refuse to ever return to painfully geeky 10 kilo backpack school days crammed with enough books to cause a backache. But this one I quite like, streamlined, simple and it fits my enormous Canon I insist on carrying with me everywhere, as well as some Caitlin Moran (not to mention 2 dozen receipts, zero cash and my lipbalm that strangely melted into liquid). And kudos to this cafe I like where the waiters always respond enthusiastically to my ‘almond milk’ coffee requests as well as the perfect cushioned spot to sit in red and blend right in.
